Teaching Children the Beauty of Reading.

As a writer and mother, I have been experiencing the joy (and tediousness) of teaching a child to read.

Granted, my daughter has learned the majority of sounding out words from Kindergarten, but during the summer I have been the one she wants to help her read. Surprisingly, she's really good at it already. It's just the long words, or ones with silent letters, that throw her off.

Now, I taught myself to read at a really young age; helping her with reading was as much of a learning experience for me as it was for her. Not only a learning experience, but also a chance for me to bond with her more. Slowly, I've noticed how her imagination is growing with the influence of books. She's gaining the love for literature that I have, and it is a beautiful thing to behold.

As a writer, and an English major, I believe literature is one of the most important things a child can learn to love.
