Reading Challenge 2018
I'm attempting the Goodreads challenge again this year. With this challenge, you pick a number of books you want to read. That's it. I've tried other challenges involving categories; they never work out for me. I feel too restricted and rebel against my own list. So, Goodreads it is. Last year, I shot for forty and ended up reading forty-eight. So, this year, I went with fifty-two, one book a week. So far, I'm on track. I read Andy Weir's new book, Artemis, last week. If you read and loved The Martian like I did, you'll probably be a little let down. The main character is a lot like the MC from The Martian; except, instead of a man stuck on Mars, Jazz is a woman who lives on the Moon. She felt a bit like a copy. Maybe he struggles writing women. Or it could be the format I chose. I did the audio version because I've been very busy making things for our Etsy store. Rosario Dawson reads it and, I don't know exactly why, but she bugs me. I think it's actually her character in the Marvel stuff. So, Claire bothers me, not Rosario. There's nothing wrong with the story, it just wasn't as good as The Martian. So, if you're going to read on Andy Weir, it should be The Martian.
I'm working my way through IT. Still. It has never taken me this long to read a book. But it's super long. So. Long. It's great, but really long. And not as scary as I thought it would be. Honestly, the few scenes Pennywise is in are the funnier parts of the book. Don't get me wrong, I'm still convinced he'll murder me in the middle of the night, but at least he'll have a sense of humor about it. According to my Kindle, I'm 81% finished. So, hopefully, IT will be my read for this week.
I attempted to listen to Gulliver's Travels, but I just don't care. I need to accept the fact that I'm not wild about classics and stop forcing myself to read them. Off the top of my head, the only classical characters I like are Ms. Havisham, who is completely bananas, Hester Prynne, and Rochester's secret wife who he keeps locked in the attic. That's it.
Oh, I also joined a book club! I'm pretty excited about it. We're reading How To Be Both this month. I'm waiting on my copy. Hopefully I can get it finished before our first meeting. That's an actual fear of mine. It's like not having completed your homework.
I'm looking forward to my challenge this year; I just hope I can stick to my schedule.
